The Next Bull Market
We are already in it, but you can't see it. It doesn't look like the one we had in '99. Like the magician who has you watching what he wants you to and with the other hand he is doing something else that is what is happening in the stock market today. The magician is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Nasdaq or the S&P500 Index. These have John Q. Public mesmerized. The Nasdaq has given back 63% of the rally high since September 17 low while the DJI has only sold off about 18%. As you see these averages going almost sideways or down and your own stock and mutual fund portfolio is doing the same so you come to the conclusion that the market isn't going anywhere right now. But there are hundreds of stocks making new high prices for the year just about every day. In fact, the majority of stocks that compose the S&P500 are higher. Why aren't yours doing the same? Analysts separate stocks into different groups that they call sectors. There are mutual funds that buy stocks associated with these sectors and then the funds are separated into categories called peer groups. If you are not in the strongest peer group you are not making money, but you know that. Or did you? Picking an individual stock that will double in a year is very difficult so I don't recommend you try. Instead look to see which are the strong peer groups to try to find a no-load mutual fund that is doing better than others. There are lots of them when you know where to look. This going to take a lot of work so I get someone to do it for me. He is an expert. A stock professional. A manager of a no-load mutual fund. No-load because I don't want to pay commission. Some mutual funds are limited by their charter as to what they may buy so you can't go with them. Others do not have these restrictions. You limit your selection to these. There are 3 that are very outstanding now ? the Small Cap Value, Mid Cap Value and Real Estate peer groups. They are all in double digit profit territory while most mutual funds as a group seem to be going sideways. These can be most easily found by searching on the Internet or calling a discount broker to see if he will get you a list. Most of them do not want to do the work for you especially since there is no commission involved. If you care about your money you will do you own searching. Making money in the market is all about being in the right place at the right time, but no one is going to do it for you. Al Thomas' book, "If It Doesn't Go Up, Don't Buy It!" has helped thousands of people make money and keep their profits with his simple 2-step method. Trying to choose a suitable stock or mutual fund has been like grasping at shadows. VIX No, this is not a symbol for some Latin number. The Wall Street mavens talk about this market timing device as if they knew how to use it to determine which way the stock market is going ? up or down. It is pretty obvious that brokers, analysts and financial planners have not learned the language. Stock Market Diversification In one of my previous articles (Investing in the stock market -9 powerful tips), tip number one was: A Common Misconception about Stock Prices I cringe every time I hear a novice investor tell me that they only purchase low priced stocks because they offer higher potential gains. A common phase I hear is "I like to buy $1 and $2 stocks because they can double easily and I will make a 100% profit". Intervention Intervention. Now don't let that big word scare you. The talking heads on TV have been discussing it all week because the major banks of the world are going to "prop up" the Euro. Shorting Stocks ? The Basics, Part I of II What does it mean to short a stock? Mutual Fund Ball and Chain The broker told me not to sell because the mutual fund I owned had a 2% redemption fee and they would penalize me if I did. Dividends When is a dividend not a dividend? Why Investors Use Financial Planners Do you have a financial planner? Does one of your friends have a financial planner? Maybe you take your advice from your broker. As I have said countless times before a broker will make you broker. And a financial planner won't do any better. I know. You thought they would. A Penny for Your Stocks According to Investopedia Inc. the penny stock market has seen phenomenal growth this past decade. From '94 to '03, the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board trading volume increased an astounding 8900%, equaling a total of 63% of the NASDAQ and 78& of the NYSE share volumes. The Problem With Hedge Funds Are hedge funds a suitable investment for you? Hedge funds are an appropriate investment for qualified purchasers with a net worth above one million dollars and an annual income exceeding two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Purchasers are often required to sign an acknowledgement confirming their qualifications to invest in hedge funds. However, just because one is qualified to invest in a hedge fund doesn't necessarily mean they should do so. There is a major problem with this type of investment. Oftentimes, the risk associated with the fund is misrepresented, leading to investors being misguided into skewing their qualifications. Enron Cure Let's hope you did not have any of the Enron stock. Bad News is Good News For weeks, no, months we have been bombarded with nothing but negative news about the economy in general and thousands of individual companies. The stock market has dropped thousands of points and more than $8 trillion in paper assets have disappeared. Why This Bear? People are constantly asking me why is the stock market going down. What is causing this bear market? It is relatively simple so don't ask an economist. He will give you a 200-page answer that is undecipherable. Can you understand Mr. Greenspan? Kick The Tires Before you buy another car you walk around the lot, kick the tires, slam the doors and look at the mileage indicator. That's an odometer. I know. That is about all the "research" you can do other than what the car salesman tells you and I hope you know better than to believe him. Valuation Every day I hear from the "experts" on CNBC-TV and the radio gurus that the way to buy stocks is find value. One man's Rembrandt is another man's connect-the-dots and fill in the spaces. Valuation is like beauty. It is in the mind of the beholder. Low Tide When you stand on the ocean shore and watch the waves breaking you might become aware that the tide is coming in or going out. It is a slow process to watch the water retreat and when it finally gets to its lowest point it is almost impossible to tell if it has stopped or will retreat further. Plenty of wave action, but going nowhere. |
